Ideas for activities for Chinese New Year 中国新年 Zhōngguó xīnnián – Chinese Lanterns

I will be sharing some great ideas for activities for your students to be decorating your classroom for Chinese New Year 中国新年 Zhōngguó xīnnián.

Make a simple lanterns 灯笼 Dēnglóng by folding your paper or card in half and cutting  every 1.5cm from the fold but not the edge of the paper leaving about 1.5cm from the edge. You can attach sparkly stickers or write words in chinese.

Why do the Chinese have lanterns at the New Year;

According to Wikipedia;

In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones .[5] In modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs.[4] For example, lanterns are now often made in the shape of animals. The lanterns can symbolize the people letting go of their past selves and getting new ones,[6] which they will let go of the next year. The lanterns are almost always red to symbolize good fortune [7]
